Who and Where ?
Kennel Dunadan is located in Kajaani, which is a town in Northern Finland.
So what actually happened to us?
Our doggy life began for real in 1991. We've always liked animals, had an aquarium for years, and in the late 80s we had for a while a Wire-haired Dachshund - but he joined the family because his first owners had trouble with him and we, complete beginners, were not equipped to deal with him for longer than a couple of years. We still wanted a hairier pet than just fish, and that's when the guinea pig "Miss Jonas" (thus named because of an initial mistake in determining her sex...) moved in.
A guinea pig, no matter how sweet, is not a dog. Somehow we still wanted to have a dog as well, and after a lot of work in choosing the breed we - for some hitherto inexplicable reason - decided that a Dandie Dinmont would be just right. Why? Can't explain. We did think about it carefully, and at least a few reasons still come to mind: a Dandie is not too large (back then we still lived in a 60 m2 apartment, third floor of the house, no elevator), and it looked so irresistibly funny.
We'd never seen a live Dandie, only some photos in books, and knew nothing more about the breed except for what those books said. Eventually we managed to dig up more info, and our decision was sealed. We definitely wanted a Dandie Dinmont!
That's how it began - and we wanted a pepper male. Absolutely.
The first Dandies and The Exception...
That's how, in 1991, our first Dandie joined the family: the mustard bitch Noella's Coco Chanel "SALLI", who was going to be strictly just a pet. However, we had friends who were interested in dog shows, so it didn't take long before we changed our mind about this "just a pet" part.
Still the same year another Dandie girl marched in. That girlie was the pepper bitch Winterway's The Bell "VEERA". We're eternally grateful to Marja & Nunnu Talvitie for letting us have this energetic bitch - her arrival completed the change that began with our first dog. "Salli" showed us the way to the world of dog people, Veera to dog shows and breeding.
The next two years we mostly spent traveling around Finland to dog shows... except that we acquired a third dog: the handsome dark brindle Boxer male "ARNO", (Vuorman Arnold). And the dog madness had progressed to a point where we had to move into a bigger apartment.
All that showing was not in vain. "Salli" became a Finnish Champion, while "Veera" even visited Italy and Southern France where she did well enough to become an International Champion. It must be noted here that "Veera" was also the very first Dandie to be placed among the top five in the Finnish Kennel Club's big shows in the Helsinki Exhibition Center (BIG-5 in December 1993).
...but that wasn't nearly the full story
Already our second litter increased the number of dogs living with us, when we decided to keep the mustard dog Dunadan Fire-Balloon "PALLO". Over the years several dogs from our own litters have lived with us for varying periods, but a few others have stayed for good: mustard dog Dunadan Selfish Giant "KOLJA" and his pepper sister Dunadan Little Infanta "FANNI", mustard bitch Dunadan Princess Leia "LEIA" from our fifth litter, and the most recent one Dunadan Misakinu "MISA". The largest number of "own dogs" we've had was 8... to see the current number look at the page Our Own Dogs.
When you have dogs, there's such a lot you can do with them, and we have tried out quite a few things. "Salli" went to Obedience trials and even completed the "Beginners' Class", Boxer "Arno" went to working trials, and some of our dogs have even shown that Dandies and Agility is not an impossible combination! "Veera" was probably the first ever Dandie to compete in Finland, but it's really her son "Kolja" who has been the most active in this field - and even if the results were nothing spectacular, he's always loved it and that's the main thing! We have also taken altogether 10 dogs (9 Dandies + 1 Boxer) to the Finnish "Character test".
And as if all that wasn't enough -
Getting involved with dogs also meant that all free time just disappeared somewhere. There's training, there's working in dog shows, and eventually Marjo even got started in becoming a Terrier judge. We've also got rather deeply entangled in arranging dog shows in our area.
Every now and then it's necessary to do some work, too. For Eija that means teaching languages to adults, while Marjo works in Metso Automation's customer documentation. And when dogs became a way of life, we felt that some other hobbies might be a good thing. Nowadays Eija sings in an ensemble called Nais-Girls, while Marjo is engaged in Oriental Dance (which is dangerously close to being a part-time profession by now...)
